What is S.A.M.?

The Society of American Magicians, founded on May 10, 1902 in Martinka’s famous magic shop in New York City, is the oldest and most prestigious magical society in the world. For nearly a century it has promoted the ideals shared by Kellar, Houdini, Thurston, and over 30,000 others world-wide who have held membership in the Society. The ideals include the elevation of the Art of Magic, the promotion of harmony among magicians, and the opposition to the unnecessary public exposure of magical effects.

Through its monthly magazine, annual conventions and 250 “Assemblies” throughout the world, the S.A.M. provides the necessary forum for the advancement of magic through discussions, lectures, research, performances, and the exchange of magic secrets within the magic community. To promote these endeavors the S.A.M. presents awards and fellowships in recognition of outstanding achievement in the Art of Magic.

If you have a serious interest in the Art of Magic then you, too, can follow the footsteps of Harry Houdini, Harry Blackstone, Jr., Siegfried & Roy, Lance Burton and David Copperfield by joining the most prestigious magic organization in the world – the Society of American Magicians.

Assembly 36

Chartered in 1943, Assembly 36 still counts among its current membership three charter members and a Past National President (PNP)! With more than forty adult members we are an active non-profit organization and we meet the second Wednesday of each month at the Holiday Inn in Metairie, LA. Membership includes professional working magicians, semi- professionals, amateurs and magic hobbyists.

Monthly meeting agendas consist of a brief business session to plan activities and events, followed by an evening of magic performed by assembly members and guests for the enjoyment of all. Skill levels vary and everyone is encouraged to participate and perform their favorite routines or practice a new one in front of a very understanding crowd. From time to time, we are visited by guest lecturers who spend an evening with us performing and revealing their latest techniques and props. Membership also affords members access to frequent workshops where interested magicians can hone their skills with professional instructors and working magicians.

If you’re interested in magic as a performance art; you want to perform on a regular basis professionally or as a volunteer entertainer, then our organization may be just the thing for you.  For more information, contact us here.
